At the January 23 Board of Selectmen meeting, Round Hill Association president Brendon DeSimone requested measures to calm traffic in back country Greenwich. Navigation apps such as Waze, are guiding out of town drivers to cut through back country roads (e.g. Porchuck Road, Riversville Road, Old Mill Road) to save time to get to and from Westchester Airport.
DeSimone said, “Our curvy, hilly, narrow, windy roads, many flanked by stone walls steams and incredible landscapes were never built to accommodate the number of cars we see today,”
DeSimone pleaded with Greenwich Department of Public Works (DPW) to collaborate more on these concerns. So far every suggestion has been met with push back but no helpful collaboration. For example, here are some of the suggestions and DPW responses::
Lower speed limit by 5 Mph - DPW said the State would not allow it
Install speed bumps - DPW said this presents safety issue for emergency vehicles
Remove double lines - DPW did not agree that this would slow down traffic
Install rumble strips - DPW said this causes noise maintenance concerns
DeSimone said they aren't putting the interest and safety of residents first. "We are taxpayers".
Between the Lines - First Selectman Camillo said "I think it's time we talk about doing the roundabout." The dreaded roundabout.
