In response to recent news of excessive teacher absenteeism causing the need for many more substitute teachers, the Greenwich Education Association is defending its teachers with "average" calculations. An average of 4 sick days for all teachers this year seems low - that's because many hardworking teachers are included in the average. Fact is that almost 12% of them have excessive sick days, requiring a big jump in expensive substitutes this year.
The Town budget allocated a 4.3% increase for education this year, but public education demands a 5.6% to 6.5% increase saying their budget is being cut. Calling a budget increase of 4.3%, "a cut" looks like creative math.
