The Greenwich Police Department just released the police blotter for January 2026. Officers responded to 3,205 calls for service during the month, which is slightly below the monthly average.
DUIs & Accidents. There were 14 DUI arrests, the highest monthly total in the last year. This spike, combined with winter snow, likely contributed to the 245 motor vehicle collisions that made January the most accident-prone month of the year.
Speed Cameras. This marks the first month police are reporting speed camera citations. A staggering 7,225 citations were mailed out. These represent a significant volume of fines—$50 for a first offense and $75 for subsequent violations—all issued without direct police interaction. Police strongly advise drivers to slow down in school zones.
Vehicle thefts Of the five vehicle thefts reported, three occurred in Central Greenwich on Railroad Avenue (near the train), on Greenwich Avenue (near Richards) and on Lafayette Place (top of the Ave); and one occurred in the Northwest area of Backcountry on Stonehedge Drive South (near King Street).
Car Break-ins Car break-ins hit a one-year high last month with eight reported incidents. These were concentrated in Western Greenwich near Ham Ave School on Harold Ave, Hamilton Avenue and View Street. Others were reported in Byram on Sherman Avenue near Hamill Rink; on Columbus Ave near Wendy's; and in Central Greenwich on Putnam Hill (near Christ Church).
Residential Burglaries Of the five burglaries reported, four were residential. Three were in Mid-Country (Mountain Wood Drive off Lake Avenue, Stanwich Road near Burning Tree Club, and Pecksland Road near Riversville Rd). One was in Western Greenwich on View Street (near Ham Ave School).
Fortunately, police have arrested a Brooklyn man and an accomplice connected with a string of burglaries (story here) between October and December. The duo targeted homes in mid- and back-country Greenwich, including locations on Round Hill Road, Stanwich Road, Butternut Hollow, Cedarwood Drive, North Street and Birch Lane.
Between the Lines: It has been a busy start to the year for the Greenwich PD. Remember to lock your house and car, don't drink and drive, and slow down in school zones.
