The Shoreline that Fought the Crown: Greenwich Welcomes Tall Ships for the 250th
Greenwich is gearing up to celebrate the U.S. Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park on Sunday, June 28, 2026.
The free, public event runs from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and features tours of the historic Dutch tall ship Oosterschelde, costumed Revolutionary-era reenactments, live music, and a special Salute to Veterans.
Note: While the event is entirely free to attend, pre-registration is required through the Greenwich Historical Society.
Key Event Features:
Tall Ship Tours: Free onboard tours of the majestic, 160-foot Oosterschelde—the last remaining three-masted topsail schooner from the original Dutch merchant fleet.
Living History: A recreated Colonial Village, complete with living history encampments and costumed reenactors bringing the 1770s to life.
Live Music: Patriotic and historic musical performances by the Greenwich Choral Society and the Sound Beach Community Band.
As the tall ship Oosterschelde makes her grand approach to Greenwich Harbor, she will be met by a special maritime welcoming party. Guided by Greenwich's own legendary racing yacht, the 72-foot wooden ketch Ticonderoga, a local escort fleet representing the town's historic sailing and yacht clubs—including Rocky Point, Old Greenwich, Riverside, Indian Harbor, Grass Island, and Byram—is expected to witness the tall ship's arrival as she makes her way to the Delamar Hotel dock.
On to New York: Following its stop in Greenwich, the Oosterschelde will join an international fleet of nearly 50 historic vessels heading to New York Harbor for the massive Sail4th 250 Parade of Sail in July 2026.
Between the Lines: History is dropping anchor exactly where it belongs. With 32 miles of intricate inlets, Greenwich’s massive coastline was the perfect haven during the Revolution for the nimble Patriot privateer fleets to disrupt British ships and supply lines. We had a part in defeating the world's most powerful navy—making it the ultimate stage to welcome this living history.
