Greenwich hedge fund manager Stephen Mandel, whose net worth is estimated at $3.6 billion, has emerged alongside his wife, Sue Mandel, as one of the largest financial backers of Democratic politicians and liberal causes in both Connecticut and the nation, according to CT Insider.

Mandel, founder of the $20 billion Greenwich-based hedge fund Lone Pine Capital, has contributed $35 million alongside his wife during this election cycle alone, with roughly $11 million concentrated in Connecticut. The couple's state-level donations account for the bulk of funding for Impact CT, an independent expenditure political action committee (PAC). Additional millions support The Connecticut Project, an allied issue-advocacy and media apparatus that pushes priorities like housing affordability, childcare access, and voter participation through statewide polling, ad campaigns, and grassroots organizing.

The couple’s growing influence recently drew national scrutiny. An October 19, 2026 report in The Wall Street Journal detailed how the Mandels are investing substantial capital to reshape Democratic politics, backing a suite of independent political entities and preparing to convene party leaders and potential 2028 presidential contenders at a "What's Next?" post-election gathering in Denver.

Nowhere is the Mandels' influence felt more directly than in their own neighborhood. One key local contest drawing the Mandels' support is Connecticut's 36th Senate District, which encompasses Greenwich and parts of Stamford and New Canaan. Democrat Jill Oberlander is facing Republican Joe Kelly for the open seat vacated by Sen. Ryan Fazio. This marks the latest high-stakes attempt by Democrats to flip the district after Fazio held off a challenge from Nick Simmons, who was also backed by the Mandels at the time.

The Mandels' deep involvement at the highest levels of the party is not new; in June 2023, they hosted a high-profile, $25,000-per-person fundraiser for President Joe Biden at their Greenwich home.

Between the Lines: Writing big checks doesn't guarantee a win. Despite heavy donor backing, neither Joe Biden nationally nor Nick Simmons locally could seal a victory. Megadonor money can define the campaign terrain, but local voter turnout still decides who crosses the finish line.
