The Greennwcih Department of Health issued a health warning on Tuesday July 22. They have been informed of episodes involving Swimmer's Itch at Greenwich Point beach.
Swimmer's Itch appears as a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to tiny parasites released by snails into fresh and salt water. Humans are not the parasites' preferred host but they can come into contact with a swimmer causing a rash with allergic reaction. The rash appears within 12 hours of exposure.
Swimmer's Itch is found throughout the world and surfaces mainly during the summer months. The location of these tiny parasites can move through various areas of the waters. Typically a beach would not be closed for this. It is not contagious and cannot be spread.
Between the Lines: Just rinse your bathing suit and take a shower as soon as you are done swimming.
