Good news for those who drive into Manhattan: congestion pricing expected to take effect on June 30, has been postponed indefinitely. The plan would have charged a $15 toll for passenger cars driving south of 60th Street from 5 am to 9 pm on weekdays, raising $1 billion annually to modernize the NYC transit system. Weekday subway ridership is still only 70% of what it was in 2019.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul cited inflation and financial pressures on working class New Yorkers as reasons not to implement congestion pricing. It turns out that the congestion pricing initiative was shaping up to be a political albatross ahead of this year's elections as politicians realize how bad this issue is polling in the suburbs of New York City.
