Stamford's dense apartment building at Old Greenwich border raising concerns

Plans for a 261-unit residential development on 9 acres at the former Conair site at Barry Place on the Stamford-Old Greenwich border are raising concerns in the community about its density. The complex is situated in Stamford directly behind the Innis Arden Golf Club and accessible through Fairfield Avenue via Shore Road & Tomac Roads in Old Greenwich.
At a public hearing of the Stamford Zoning Board last week, residents of Stamford and Old Greenwich expressed worries that the project's size (the apartment building's density is 40 units per acre) is not in keeping with the nearby lower density Waterside neighborhood along Congress Street.
The apartment complex includes 474 parking spaces. Cars will be a necessity for residents as the complex is not in walking distance near transit or shopping. Also, the new Wings Skating Rink is now operating next door with its own traffic patterns. Some local residents fear the increased traffic and congestion could impact both Stamford (Congress Street, Fairfield Ave) and Old Greenwich (Shore Road & Tomac Avenue) as apartment dwellers will use these streets to access train stations and amenities.
The zoning board is waiting for a report from the city's traffic bureau on the latest traffic study and will continue deliberations on the proposal next month. You can contact the Stamford Zoning Board about this project here.
