It's not just another month proclaiming this or that cause. October is Domestic Violence awareness month. Based on the numbers, this is a real issue with an outsized impact on Greenwich.
The statistics are shocking. It's more than just the occasional family dispute. Domestic violence is the most reported violent crime in the town of Greenwich. On average the Greenwich Police respond to 15 domestic incidents per month. In July, there were as many as 25 incidents. Last year the Greenwich YWCA Domestic Abuse Services responded to 3,200 calls.
The national stats put the issue into perspective. One in two women and two in five men will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime. About 19% of intimate partner violence involves a weapon. Access to a firearm increases the risk of death by 5 times.
Between the Lines: Greenwich may be ranked as one of the most desirable places to live, but this Domestic Violence Awareness month of October is a reminder that we can do better.
