September 11, 2001: Never Forget
It happened 25 years ago. Terrorists linked to the Islamist extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial U.S. passenger airplanes that morning. It was a suicide mission, turning the aircraft into guided missiles aimed at major American landmarks.
All passengers and crew aboard the four hijacked flights perished:
American Airlines Flight 11 (87 onboard) and United Airlines Flight 175 (60 onboard), which struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City.
American Airlines Flight 77 (59 onboard), which struck the Pentagon in Arlington, VA.
United Airlines Flight 93 (40 onboard), which crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA, after passengers courageously fought back to prevent it from reaching its target in Washington, D.C.
Paulie's Beverage Cart Pushed Through Greenwich
Retired flight attendant Paul "Paulie" Veneto set out to honor the bravery of his fallen colleagues by pushing an airline beverage cart all the way from Boston Logan International Airport to Ground Zero. On Sunday, September 6, his journey brought him through Greenwich. Local police officers, firefighters, and dozens of cheering residents lined the route to support him. He captures the vivid memories of commuters who took their ordinary morning train to Grand Central Station on that clear autumn day—and the eerie, quiet journey home beside fellow passengers covered in soot. As night fell, many wondered how many cars left in the station parking lots would never be picked up. Some commuters refused to work in an office tower after 9/11.
