St. Catherine's has canceled its Carnival of Fun this year. Located across from the church at 4 Riverside Avenue, this long running community favorite included entertainment, games, rides, 50/50 raffles and the beloved pizza fritte. Previously, it had only closed during the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022.

Why now? The Carnival requires about 200 volunteers to go through a background check, training and dedicate a few nights in a row to safely and productively operate the Carnival.

"In 1965, you could have a carnival for two weeks because people could just show up and volunteer. With child abuse and elder abuse, we can't do that anymore. Our lives are no longer as spontaneous as they used to be, regrettably," said Pastor Platt.

The St. Roch's feast in Chickahominy scheduled for August 15 to 17 has also scaled back. It will be held at the church and not at Hamilton Avenue School this year and it will be held for 3 days, not 4 days as in the past. Hamilton Avenue School has scheduled parking lot construction for the next 2 years.

Between the Lines:

The days of church fairs may be coming to an end - regrettably
