There are about 820 moorings in Greenwich's waters and about 50 of them are abandoned. Harbormaster Paul Cappiali is coordinating the efforts to extract them from the sea floor. The dangerous ones are those that have lost their buoys and tackle and cannot be seen from the water's surface. Without their markings people are liable to collide with underwater anchors.
The work is expected to happen intermittently through the spring and early summer.
