A new feral cat ordinance scheduled to be debated at the RTM (Representative Town Meeting) on Monday night was withdrawn. The issue was brought before the Selectmen in August by residents concerned about the overpopulation of feral cats mainly in Old Greenwich. The ordinance would have required keepers of stray cats to register them with the town's animal control officer and have them sterilized.
The RTM committees thought the ordinance was not in legal order. It would be hard for the Town to enforce such ordinance when residents harboring multiplying feral cats would have difficulty tracking them down to register them. The Town of Greenwich animal control is here to help and educate.
Between the lines: Less regulation and more community education. A purrrrfect practical solution.
