Update: Power grab by Democrats on the Board of Education

Updated: Oct 23, 2024

Due to a resignation this summer, there has been an opening for the Republican seat on the eight-member publicly-elected Board of Education. Six Republicans were under consideration. The Board planned to meet this Wednesday Oct 23, but instead, the four Democrats called an emergency meeting on Monday Oct 21 that included only one (Dr. Mercanti-Anthony) of the three Republican members. At that meeting the four Democrats voted to pick their favored candidate - Jen Behette, one of the six Republicans with the least support of the Republican Board members.

Republican Board member Kittle said "the Democrats opted for a complete power grab." First Selectman Camillo said "this is an attempt to subvert the will of not only the three Republican BOE members, but the will of the voters in the last election." Selectman Camillo called the emergency meeting "illegal" because proper advanced notice of 24 hours was not made.

Update: At a meeting of the Board of Selectmen held today October 22 at 3pm, the Selectman exercised his authority to select the replacement and moved to appoint Paul Cappiali to fill the vacancy. Cappiali is currently running against incumbent Democrat Steve Meskers for the State representative seat in the 150th District. The Board has filed a lawsuit against the Town claiming that the Selectmen do not have authority to fill this vacancy on the basis that the Board of Education gets its authority from the State, not local statute.
