Wondering why you are seeing so many people masking up at the grocery store again? The "Super Flu" has officially arrived, and it has hit Connecticut especially hard.

Connecticut is experiencing one of the most aggressive starts to its flu season on record. In December 2025, cases in the state surged over 600% compared to the same time last year. The culprit is a specific variant which was identified as Influenza A (H3N2, Subclade K). Because this strain was identified after the current season's vaccine formulation, the flu shot is not a perfect match, which is contributing to the high number of breakthrough cases.

It's nicknamed the "Super Flu" because of its rapid spread and intensity. Symptoms include high fever (often spiking to 104°), extreme fatigue, persistent cough, and gastrointestinal issues.

Between the Lines: Looking at the CDC map, a pattern emerges. The "Very High" activity is concentrated in Connecticut and the neighboring blue states such as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Go figure.
