Four new speed cameras have been added to Greenwich school zones, making a total of nine speed cameras now operating in Greenwich.
The four new camera locations are: Central Middle School, Glenville School, Greenwich High School and Parkway School. At these locations, warnings will be issued until December 17, 2025 when fines begin.
Five existing camera locations are now beyond the warning period and issuing real tickets. Tickets are mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. For the first offense, it's $50 and thereafter it's $75. The active locations are: North Street School, Eagle Hill School, Brunswick Lower School, Greenwich Academy and Central Middle School (second camera).
The cameras detect vehicles exceeding the speed limit in school zones. Enforcement is limited to periods when school is in session and the associated speed limit lights are flashing. The citations will not add points to a license or impact insurance.
In the first 30-day trial period, the cameras issued a "low hundreds" number of warnings according to this Greenwich Time interview with Greenwich Police Sgt. James Smith.
Between the Lines: It's a Faustian bargain: we agree to impersonal digital surveillance, in return for increased safety around our schools.
