New cell phone ban will have outsized impact on high school students

A new cell phone policy (here) was updated by the school administration last week. It seems to re-enforce what is already being done in K-8, cutely labeled "No Cell Bell to Bell" and "Off and Away" in lockers or backpacks.

However, for high school students the restrictions far are tighter than before, even though the policy states that "self regulation" is an important skill to learn for high school students

At the high school most classes already require storing phones during class time. However, the new policy labeled "Away All Day", further restricts use of cell phones during open blocks, lunch, in restrooms and other free time.

This new high school policy is much more restrictive, allowing very little discretion ("self-regualtion") by students. Consequences for violating the policy begin in January 2025.

Between the lines: This importatant new policy was updated unilaterally by the school administrators. There was no approval from our publicly-elected Board of Education, nor public hearing. As a result of this top down approach, more controversy is likely to ensue.
