Mosquitoes trapped near the Eastern Greenwich Civic Center in Old Greenwich have been found and the Town is using a larvicide program to contain, but not eliminate, the population. The recent warm weather and rain have contributed to breeding.
The virus does not spread from person-to-person contact, only by mosquito bite. Symptoms occur suddenly, between 5-15 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. They range from slight fever, headache, rash, swollen lymph nodes, nausea, malaise and eye pain, to the rapid onset of severe headache, high fever, stiff neck, disorientation, severe muscle weakness, gastrointestinal symptoms, coma or death.
Between the lines: Last year five (only five) Connecticut residents developed West Nile-associated illness. None of the cases were fatal. We can all calm down now.
