Man arrested for stealing $100,000 designer bags from Greenwich shop

Updated: Jun 19

A New York man who broke into Consigneed Designs, 115 Mason Street, Greenwich on January 5 and stole $100,000 in designer handbags was arrested on Monday.

Jonathan Jeanty, 23, of Brooklyn, was suspected of being one of three individuals who pried open a window at the consignment store and made off with countless designer handbags which the store owners roughly estimated to be worth $100,000.

The individuals seen on camera breaking into the store were wearing gloves during the theft. Before the break-in, the store owner received a “suspicious call” from someone whose caller ID stated they were “Jonathan Jeanty,” according to the affidavit. The caller “began to ask questions regarding luxury handbags and if said handbags were kept in the store and was extremely persistent on the locations of the bags."

Investigators later traced some of the stolen products to a Manhattan business whose owner allegedly said that the bags had been sold to him by someone he identified as Jeanty.

An analysis of Jeanty’s phone records also placed him in Greenwich at the time of the theft, according to the affidavit. Detectives spoke with Jeanty, who, they said, allegedly admitted to possessing and selling the bags but said he bought the bags off “an unknown person” on the street.

Jeanty was arraigned at the state Superior Court in Stamford on Tuesday, where a judge lowered his bond from $75,000 to $25,000. He is next expected to appear in court on Aug. 14.
