Machetes and Blades and Knives, Oh My: Near Greenwich's Byram Neighborhood

A violent altercation directly across the river from Greenwich’s Byram neighborhood has locals on edge.

On Tuesday, September 8th around 10:00 p.m., a melee involving 8 to 10 individuals broke out on the second level of the MTA Parking Garage at 2 Waterfront Place in Port Chester—located near the AMC theater and Costco.

Prior Context

Port Chester Police indicate the brawl was likely connected to an incident three hours earlier (around 5:30 p.m.), in which a shirt was set on fire and posted to social media. Days before the garage incident, Greenwich Police intercepted a Westchester-wanted suspect who fled down Chestnut Street in Byram; a large knife was seized from his vehicle.

The Crime Scene

MTA and local police recovered a tactical-style machete, razor blades, and multiple large knives from the scene. Two individuals who suffered lacerations to the face and head were transported to Westchester County Medical Center. Several individuals fled on foot, leaving a blood trail before Port Chester officers intercepted them.

Illegal Criminal Gangs?

While Port Chester Police explicitly stated there is no official confirmation that the incident was gang-related, the heavy involvement of machetes and edged weapons fits a pattern frequently documented in clashes tied to Central and South American street gangs operating throughout the tri-state area.

Arrests

The following people were charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon:

  • Unnamed 17-year-old male (Port Chester, NY)

  • Hector Durasno-Escandon, 18 (Port Chester, NY)

  • Jorge Osoy Lopez, 18 (Port Chester, NY)

  • Kleyster Gonzalez, 20 (Port Chester, NY)

  • Wilmer Ledesma, 22 (Queens, NY)

Between the Lines: The total absence of published booking photos and citizenship details leaves residents asking whether local sanctuary policies are masking broader gang involvement and legal status issues in our backyards.
