Is there a crime wave in Greenwich - yes and no

Greenwich police chief Jim Heavy says that the recent rash of ATM thefts from gas stations have residents worried about a crime wave here.

The good news: the number of cars stolen dropped 33% from 120 stolen last year to 80 stolen this year. Why? More residents are locking their cars. He noted that many cars are stolen by professional criminals and youth gangs and when returned have damage, some with "bullet holes, blood, and other evidence of violent crime."

The bad news: commercial burglaries are up 25% from 16 last year to 20 incidents this year. Drug overdoses rose 77% from 9 to 16 incidents.

What you should do: Lock your car, increase your security in your office/retail store and realize that drugs are more dangerous than ever.
