CT Governor Lamont (D) announced here that he has scheduled a vote on Friday August 1 to borrow $155 million to offset certain public benefits charges on resident's electric bills. Consumers will see a modest reduction of around $10 per month on electric bills that are already the highest in the nation.
This is a temporary reduction. It will take place in September 2025 and continue for several months into 2026. More borrowing will be needed to continue the program into 2027.
The public benefits charge (amounting to about 20% of most bills) helps delinquent ratepayers and funds green energy initiatives such as electric vehicle charging stations. Ratepayers say that it is unfair to add these charges to electric bills when they should be part of the State budget making process.
Between the Lines: While rate relief might make good headlines for campaigning politicians, it's likely to backfire as most sentient CT residents know that a temporary $10 savings is laughable. And, borrowing to do this, adds insult to injury.
