This shocking video of the dilapidated drug-infested neighborhoods around Yale University is hard to watch. New Haven has the highest drug overdose rates in the country and yet it's next to the most prestigious university in the nation. How did this happen?
Pistol Wavin' New Haven. Many CT cities such as New Haven were once manufacturing powerhouses making clocks, rubber and guns. These businesses such as Winchester Firearms, moved operations offshore and eventually closed. The cities failed to re-industrialize or fill the void with new high paying jobs. Why? CT is a blue state that now has one of the highest tax burdens and energy prices in the country.
Gated Community of Yale. To protect itself, Yale has created an expanding bubble to keep the University safe from the rest of New Haven. Yale has been expanding its real estate holdings. It now owns over half of New Haven and is New Haven's largest employer. Yale doesn't really pay regular property taxes, because these taxes are voluntary for them. As a result, the remaining taxpaying businesses and residents in New Haven are left to pick up the tab for services such as schools, police, etc. They move out to lower tax places due to this burden.
Between the Lines: Yale has 400 years of scholarly thinking and a $40 billion endowment. Shouldn't they be able to solve this problem? Anyway, the pizza is great there.
