Greenwich Teachers Union Exposes Morale Crisis, but the Board's Hands are Tied

Last week, the Greenwich Education Association (GEA) issued a stark statement regarding a crisis in teacher morale. After surveying more than 600 Greenwich educators, the union revealed that over 90% of respondents believe morale has actively declined during their tenure within Greenwich Public Schools.
Teachers Feel Excluded
According to the survey, the primary drivers of this decline are district-level leadership, a pervasive lack of trust, a missing professional voice, and unsustainable workloads. Educators expressed a growing frustration over being systematically excluded from the very decisions that impact classroom teaching and learning.
One-Way Conversation
The GEA stated that the survey was intended to spark a meaningful, collaborative dialogue among educators, district leadership, and the elected Board of Education. Instead, union leadership claims that while Greenwich educators have spoken loud and clear, the Board of Education is simply refusing to listen.
How to Fix Low Employee Morale
If morale is cratering across Greenwich Public Schools, accountability ultimately points to Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones. As the district's chief executive, the buck stops with her. Individual Board of Education members cannot directly intervene in day-to-day school operations; however, they do control the superintendent's contract.
The data shows that morale has been slipping for years. Yet, in May 2025—under the cloud of intense litigation regarding the very legitimacy of its own members—the Board voted 5–3 to extend Dr. Jones’s contract for an additional two years, securing her position through June 30, 2028.
Between the Lines: At this point, the train has officially left the station for the Board to make any real change. By rushing to lock in a long-term contract extension, the Board can offer all the sympathy they want, but they have left themselves with barely any leverage to fix this workplace crisis. Mandatory pizza party, anyone?
