Greenwich taxpayers about to be squeezed from all sides

Greenwich taxpayers are getting hit with taxes from every angle. Locally, property taxes are set to increase under the proposed Greenwich budget and may increase further if the public school lobby succeeds in re-opening the budget and getting everything they initially demanded. At the state level in Harford, the Democrat controlled legislature is proposing increasing income and capital gains taxes. Ouch.

Last week a Connecticut Senate Committee led by Democrats, put forth a new proposal to boost taxes. The proposal included boosting the state income tax rate on the top two brackets from 6.9% to 7.99%. In addition to that, the Democrat-led Tax Equity Caucus in the House Representatives put forth a proposal to add a "temporary" surcharge that would increase the capital gains tax on the wealthy from 7% to 9%.

Democrat state representative Anne Hughes (D-Easton) who co-chairs that caucus caused a backlash when she was caught on a hot mic saying the quiet part out loud (story here). She said "Tax my people. They won't even notice."

Governor Ned Lamont, up for re-election next year, wisely stated that "boosting state taxes on the rich would prompt them to flee Connecticut". His office prefers to increase the number of taxpayers in our state rather than increasing taxes.

Between the Lines - Mark Twain, who lived and worked in Hartford, said the tax man will take every last thing from you, at least the taxidermist leaves the outer layer for people to admire.
