The long, turbulent saga of Samuel Klein is finally reaching its final chapter. As first reported by Chris Fountain’s For What It’s Worth, the estate at 131 Pecksland Road has been re-listed. Originally purchased by Klein in 1997 for $6.35 million, the property is now being offered for $6.7 million under foreclosure conditions—a quiet end for a home tied to a multi-million dollar federal fraud case.
Rise and Fall
Samuel Klein was once a titan in the New York and Connecticut real estate scenes. His attorneys noted that he built Fairchild Properties and Fairchild Realty Group into enterprises that, at their peak, employed 3,200 people. His portfolio was massive, including:
Hotels: The Southbury Hilton, Danbury Hilton, Westport Inn, and the Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square.
Care Facilities: Payton Lane Nursing Home (Southampton), Chandler Care Center (Ossining), and Oakwood Care Center (Oakdale).
Residential: Treetops at Mohegan Lake and Kensington Green of Southbury.
However, his lawyers claim his business was "crippled" by the 2008 financial crisis. What followed wasn't just a business failure, but a criminal one.
Promises, Ponzi-Style
In May 2022, at age 66, Klein was sentenced to three years in federal prison. Prosecutors revealed that Klein swindled approximately $1.5 million from friends and associates. He lured them with promises of "guaranteed profits" on real estate deals that didn't exist.
Instead of investing the funds, Klein used his inner circle as a personal ATM to fund a lifestyle he could no longer afford. Court records highlighted a staggering lack of restraint:
$194,000 spent on five brief trips to the ultra-luxury Amangani Resort in Jackson, Wyoming.
$60,000 on chartered private air travel.
Between the Lines: At the end of the day, was a $40,000 weekend at the Amangani Resort with some logo-branded Amangani gear really worth betraying close friends and spending three years in federal prison?
