Greenwich Public School Superintendent's contract extended despite objections

At last Thursday’s Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones’ contract was extended an additional year, through June 30, 2026.  Dr Jones became superintendent, effective July 1, 2019

Supporters say:

·      She represents continuity after a revolving door of Greenwich superintendents (14 in last 20 years)

·      She dealt with Central Middle School pipe bursting with rapid relocation of children

·      During the pandemic, she kept schools open longer, pivoted to remote classrooms quickly and reopened schools faster than other districts in the State.

·      Test scores have held up pretty well

·      Has a challenging job with 15 schools and diverse student body

Detractors say:

·      She aggressively promotes progressive values and teaching practices

·      Recent hires have all checked the equity and social justice boxes

·      Academic achievement and graduation metrics have slipped

·      Spending on special education is high and results not good

The motion to renew passed:

5 yes: Mercanti-Anthony (Republican), Hirsh (Democrat), Kostin (Democrat), Stowe (Democrat), Koven (Democrat)

2 no: Kowalski (Republican) and Vizzo Walsh (Republican)

1 abstain:  Kittle (Republican)
