Since the ban on gas-powered leaf blowers took effect with the imposition of a fine this year, Greenwich residents have been busy reporting each other. And Greenwich Police are spending more time than they should responding to complaints.
From the start of the seasonal ban on May 23 through the end of August, police have received 479 complaints. That's approximately 5 complaints per day
According to Greenwich Police Chief Heavey, there have been many times when responding to complaints, police arrive and no gas leaf blowers are active. There were many instances where the reported gas leaf blower has instead been noise originating from equipment that is not banned, such as lawn mowers or weed wackers. Responding to the requests takes about 15-20 minutes away from the officers' other duties. Sounds like the police wish this wasn't part of their job description.
Between the Lines: A Quiet Yards Greenwich survey produced some interesting feedback. One respondent said we need compliance teams and more yard signs. Her name was Karen.
