The Greenwich Police Department has officially traded the paper trail for a high-tech upgrade. The department’s crime data is now available on a publicly accessible Crime Data Portal, bringing a new level of transparency to the community.
Updated every morning at 7:00 AM, the portal provides a comprehensive look at police service calls throughout Greenwich, complete with an interactive map to help residents visualize exactly where incidents are occurring.
Key Features of the Portal
The Portal has sections that track incidents and show historical trends.
Incident Blotter: Track specific crimes like burglary or aggravated assault. You can even sort by street name—for instance, data shows that so far this year there were 2 burglaries, one car theft and one leaf blower complaint on Stonehedge Drive in Northwest Greenwich.
Crime Trends: View how crime rates shift over the years. Currently, some of the most frequent offenses in Greenwich include DUI, Identity Theft, Burglary, Motor Vehicle Theft and Theft from Vehicle.
Stolen Vehicles: This section monitors vehicle theft patterns. Interestingly, the data reveals that Friday is the most common day for cars to go missing and the Prius is the most frequently stolen car.
Accident Tracking: Looking at historical trends, the portal shows that accidents peak in May, specifically on Tuesdays from mid to late afternoon.
MV Stops: Curious about traffic enforcement? Most citations are issued on Wednesday mornings between 9:00 and 10:00 AM, with "traveling too fast" being the primary reason for a pull-over.
Arrests: This section provides a searchable list of arrests, including names, dates, and the nature of the crime. You can look up names here.
The digital shift makes it easier to stay informed about your neighborhood. Whether you're checking on a local street or looking up public arrest records, the information is now just a click away.
Between the Lines: If the thought of your name appearing on a permanent, searchable public portal doesn't make you think twice about breaking the law, nothing will.
