Greenwich First Selectman Unveils Dog Sanctuary for Remaining Acreage at Hamill Rink Park

With the Dorothy Hamill Rink and Strazza baseball field projects now confirmed to occupy 48% of the total acreage at Byram's Morlot Park, First Selectman Fred Camillo has unveiled a surprise proposal to utilize the remaining western corner.

The plan, titled the "Camillo Canine Commons," ("CCC") would transform the final undeveloped patch of green space into a world-class, residents-only dog sanctuary. The park would be nestled near the Veterans Memorial Tree Grove, but notably will not touch it, preserving the "historical buffer" residents have requested.

Key features of the proposal include:

  • Dorothy Hamill Endorsement: The First Selectman’s office released a statement noting that Olympic legend Dorothy Hamill has written a letter in favor of adding a dog park near the ice rink. "I’ve spent my life on ice," Hamill reportedly wrote, "and I fully support Fred’s vision for adding grass to build a 'Gold Medal' qualilty dog sanctuary."

  • Traffic Calming Speed Cameras: As part of a broader Traffic Study, the town will install automated speed cameras along Sherman Avenue and Western Junior Highway. Vehicles clocked over 20 mph will be automatically fined, with proceeds going directly toward the "CCC" maintenance fund.

  • World Class Amenities: The park will feature automated hydration stations (doggie bowls), receptacles with free green doggie bags attached, and fire hydrants. These will be placed strategically on a paved walkway with low level lighting. The landscaping will include a robust canopy of native trees and shrubs.

  • Public-Private Funding: An anonymous group of private donors have promised to provide the initial capital. High-end donors will receive a signature green vest with the "CCC" letters embroidered on the chest. Everyday resident donors will receive a commemorative patch that they can sew on their own vest.

"We have the Hamill ice, the Strazza field, the Veterans tree grove and now we'll have a place for dog lovers," a spokesperson for the First Selectman’s office said. "By the time we're done, the green space at Morlot Park will be optimized for all."

Between the Lines:  And if you believe that, you have lived in Greenwich far too long. April Fools!
