Greenwich Academy English teacher embroiled in anti-semitic controversy

Aisha Abdel Gawad, a high school English teacher at Greenwich Academy, drew controversy after she refused to take part in a book festival panel because she stated that the panel' moderator was a "Zionist". Gawad is the author of the popular book "Between Two Moons", a novel exploring what it means to be a young muslim woman in America.

The public outcry, that included thousands of emails, caused Wilton Library to revoke her role as writer-in-residence and her $30,000 stipend.

According to the Connecticut Centinal, during the 2020-2021 academic year, Gawad was identified as the head of Greenwich Academy's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging ("DEIB") program. This DEIB program has been under fire for using a controversial curriculum from the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance program that promotes critical race theory.

Greenwich Academy parents were notified and told that the school would "continue to monitor the situation and respond accordingly."

Between the lines: According to the Free Press, Greenwich Academy reached out to recent graduates to ask about Gawad's English classes. Likely, more to come.
