For the first time starting in September 2025, Greenwich will deploy automated speed cameras in school zones to cut down on dangerous driving. The cameras will initially be located in ten of fifteen school zones in Greenwich.

Automated traffic cameras became legal in 2023 in Connecticut, but the law says municipalities need to justify the placement of each camera. In Connecticut so far only one municipality has a state-approved camera plan - Washington, a rural town in Litchfield County. Plans from other CT towns are waiting for approval include Greenwich, Middletown, New Haven, Stamford, Stratford and Wethersfield. Greenwich expects to hear back from the CT Department of Transportation in 60 days at which point cameras could go up.

Speed cameras detect when a passing vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by 10 mph or more and a photograph is taken of the offender's vehicle/license plate. Anyone caught in the first 30 days will be issued a warning, but after that, real tickets will show up in mailboxes. Fines are $50 for the first violation and $75 after that.

Between the Lines - The Greenwich Police Chief said the goal is not to generate revenue, but for safety around schools. There's no hiding from big brother anymore.
