The Democrat Party pulled off stunning victories in the elections across the region last night.
The new mayor of New York City, 34-year old Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, won by a large margin. He promises lots of handouts that will be paid for by the wealthy.
The Democratic wave also swept across Connecticut, where the party celebrated numerous high-profile flips and holds. Democrats won top-of-ballot seats in key towns like New Britain and Norwich, and wealthy suburban towns like Westport and Branford. Crucially, they successfully unseated Republican incumbents in major races in Ansonia, Bristol, Stratford, and Milford.
In Greenwich, Republican incumbents maintained control of the three-member Board of Selectmen - First Selectman (Fred Camillo, R) and Selectwoman (Lauren Rabin, R), but their victories were less commanding than in prior cycles. Democrat Rachel Khanna earned the third Selectman seat receiving a number of votes very close to Rabin's and well ahead of her First Selectman running mate, Anthony Moor.
The biggest local shock, however, was the historic shift in control of the powerful 12-member Board of Estimate and Taxation (BET) - the town's fiscal body. The six Democrats received more votes than their six Republican contenders, giving Democrats the power to choose the Chair who possesses the tie-breaking vote. Except for a brief period in 2018-2019, Republicans have controlled the BET for over 30 years.
Greenwich voters clearly decided that they did not like the tight financial controls imposed by the Republicans. The Democrats successfully convinced voting moms and dads that they will spend more freely on public schools.
Between the Lines: The spending party has begun.
