Kamala Harris has enough delegate support on Monday night to become the Democratic Party nominee for President. An unofficial survey by the AP indicates that she has the backing of at least 2,579 delegates, more than the 1,976 she will need to win on a first ballot.
In a voice vote in Connecticut on Monday, the 79 delegates and alternatives voted overwhelmingly to back Harris as the nominee.
Still, the AP is not calling Harris the new presumptive nominee. That’s because the convention delegates are still free to vote for the candidate of their choice at the Democrat National convention in Chicago on August 19-22 or if Democrats agree to have a virtual roll call ahead of the convention.
Between the lines: While Democrats coronate Harris, Republicans ask "Where's Biden?" Rumors about Biden's precarious health (beyond Covid 19) are intensifying, including questions about his fitness to operate as Commander in Chief.
