Demand for free healthcare explodes in CT for undocumented immigrants

The CT program providing state-sponsored health care for children regardless of immigration status, otherwise known as "HUSKY for Immigrants" has seen explosive demand since it launched in 2023.

More enrolled than expected. Officials predicted 4,250 kids would sign up, but by April 2024, 11,000 children were enrolled. In July 2024 when the program was expanded to include children up to age 16, the numbers have risen to 15,000.

Overruns are large and not yet known. Already oversubscribed, CT's Medicaid shortfall is over $200 million. The brand new "HUSKY for immigrants" program is not covered by the Federal government Medicare contribution, nor is it capped, and the CT Department of Social Services still does not have a clear understanding of these costs. It is estimated that the total cost will run CT roughly $30 million for FY 2025, compared to the $18.9 million earmarked for the program.

Between the lines: They expect to know the numbers in time for the February 2025 budget.
