On Mischief Night, October 30, 1975, 15-year-old Martha Moxley was bludgeoned to death just steps from her home in the ritzy Belle Haven neighborhood of Greenwich, Connecticut. The weapon of choice? A golf club.
A cold case for decades. In the wake of the brutal murder, Greenwich police, more familiar with handing out traffic citations than conducting homicide investigations, found themselves in over their heads. They had their suspects from the start: Tommy Skakel, then age 17, was the third eldest child of the wealthy Rush Skakel family, whose home was adjacent to the Moxley family. Another suspect was Kenneth Littleton, age 23, the Skakel family live-in tutor and science teacher/coach at Brunswick School.

The Skakel family carried significant political weight through their connection with the Kennedy family -- Rush Skakel's sister, Ethel, was married to Robert F. Kennedy. Despite the proximity of the suspects, the case went cold and remained unsolved for years.
Conviction, Overturn, and Questions. Twenty-seven years after Martha's death, the case was reopened. Michael Skakel, who was only 15 at the time of the murder, was convicted at age 39. He spent over 11 years in prison before his conviction was overturned.
The court ruled that his counsel, Micky Sherman, failed to provide an effective defense by missing key evidence. This reversal brings back the haunting question at the heart of the series - if Michael Skakel didn't kill Martha Moxley, who did?
