CT Recommends Electric Shock Mats for Bears—What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

If you live in mid- or backcountry Greenwich, spotting a black bear isn’t a novelty anymore—it’s a routine occurrence.

Statewide, bear break-ins are reaching unprecedented levels. According to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), bears have entered Connecticut homes more than 50 times this year—already topping all of last year’s break-ins, with home intrusions across nearly two dozen municipalities and sightings in all 169 cities and towns.

The State's Solution: The Electric "Unwelcome Mat"

To counter the break-ins, DEEP is advising homeowners to install electric shock mats outside exterior doors, French doors, and ground-floor windows. When a bear steps on the mat, it completes an electrical circuit, receiving a harmless but sharp jolt that conditions the animal to stay away from human homes.

Reality Check

Local blogger Chris Fountain points out the glaring flaw in the plan: What happens when it’s not a bear on your porch? As Halloween approaches, an electrified front step could easily catch more than just wildlife.

Between the Lines: Be kind and don't forget to take the shock mats off ahead of Halloween, delivery drop-offs, and before the in-laws step up to the front door.
