CT now bans first cousin marriages

Under a law passed this week, Connecticut is set to ban marriages between first cousins, effective October 1, 2025. CT joins two dozen other states prohibiting this practice. However, there are no laws against this in many nearby states including Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

Between the Lines: It is not clear why this ban was not already common sense and why it was moved forward now? Legislators seem to spend more time worried about first cousins than solving the real problems of getting our taxes and electric costs down.
