CT Gov. Lamont Brushes Aside Reporter’s Camera in Tense Campaign Trail Confrontation

In the tense final days before an election, composure on the campaign trail is often pushed to the limit.

During a Saturday morning stop at Scalzi Park in Stamford, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont was captured on video swiping at a smartphone held by a reporter representing the Connecticut Centinel.

The confrontation, which quickly circulated across social media, escalated when the reporter approached the governor to press him about Rob Blanchard—a former Lamont administration aide running for the 28th District State Senate seat. The reporter questioned Lamont regarding unconfirmed allegations surrounding Blanchard’s supposed involvement in a recent police traffic stop and motor vehicle incident.

Instead of addressing the inquiry, Lamont blocked the phone with the back of his hand, saying, "What is this about? It looks like a prepared deal to me."

Lamont later dismissed the exchange, framing the interaction as deliberate political theater rather than an everyday press query. "The reporter showed up looking for trouble," Lamont said, with his team maintaining that partisan operatives have routinely sought to ambush events down the stretch.

The incident drew swift condemnation from Republican gubernatorial contender State Sen. Ryan Fazio, who framed the encounter as an unacceptable double standard. "Governor Lamont has hired a tracker who follows me around and videos me everywhere, and I have never lost my temper with him," Fazio said.

Details regarding the alleged traffic incident involving Blanchard remain unconfirmed by official police records at press time.

Between the Lines: The incident cuts to an ongoing tension on modern campaign trails: the blurry line between legitimate press accountability and partisan provocation. But optics matter—and to many voters, swatting a camera looks less like deflecting an ambush and more like an official unwilling to face uncomfortable questions.
