CT drags its feet on regional offshore wind deal

Updated: Sep 18

CT, MA and RI hoped to create the most cost effective carbon-free wind power in the region by joining forces in a three state solution to build and contract for offshore wind power. However, on the latest project from Vineyard Offshore, MA and RI are moving forward but CT is dragging its feet.

The problem, says CT Democrat Governor Ned Lamont, is that wind power costs three or even four times more than the market for conventional wholesale power these days. Despite a goal to have a zero carbon grid by 2040, Lamont is concerned that contracting now for high cost wind power might further increases electric prices in CT that have already made ratepayers furious. And Lamont is facing massive opposition from the Republican party. Lamont's wait-and-see makes sense since these wind projects are being built anyway and there is no reason to do this now and further annoy ratepayers before the election.

Between the lines: In addition to offshore wind being uneconomic, no mention about the injury to birds and whales, or the broken wind turbine blades washing ashore. Move along, nothing to see here.
