The CT Senate Higher Education Committee is pushing Senate Bill 203 that would effectively end legacy admissions in Connecticut. It would prohibit colleges and universities in the state from asking applicants about family connections to the school to which they are applying.
This bill was proposed following the Supreme Courts dicision in June to overturn race-based affirmative action admissions policies at colleges and universities.
The presidents of Fairfield University, Sacred Heart University, and Trinity College and Yale all submitted written testimony in opposition to the bill saying the state should not dictate legacy decisions nor whom they hire as faculty, what they teach in the curriculum.
When the State of CT meddles like this, think about the unintended consequences e.g. Will the endowments shrink? Will they be permitted to recruit less academically qualified students for sport teams? Are college sports teams diverse enough? Will the State start taxing all that property owned by these universities? They are opening pandora’s box here.
