The migrant crisis is more costly than Americans realize. Last year, US taxpayers shelled out some $150 billion in government services to help the 20 million illegal migrants in the country, according to a study from the Federation for American Immigration (FAIR). And most of the cost is being borne by state and local governments.
Connecticut ranks 18th as one of the states that has spent the most on the migrant crisis. Social costs include not just emergency housing but also education, medical expenses, law enforcement, legal costs and welfare. See the breakdown chart for CT here.
Between the lines: That’s a cost of almost $1,000 per CT household last year.
