Construction Begins on Old Greenwich's Shore Road Sidewalk to Tod's Point

With summer beach traffic behind us, construction on the long-awaited Shore Road Sidewalk project is officially getting underway. Daily traffic on Shore Road reaches approximately 2,250 vehicles—alongside several active school bus stops—making dedicated pedestrian infrastructure a major safety upgrade for Old Greenwich.

The Project

Greenwich Public Works announced that work will begin Tuesday, October 13, starting at the intersection of Sound Beach Avenue and proceeding southwest toward Tod's Point. The project will terminate at the intersection of Shore Road and South Crossway (within the Lucas Point Association, without penetrating the narrowest, most challenging, access point to the beach park, which town officials could evaluate in future phases).

According to the project plans, the sidewalk will run on the north/west side of Shore Road—the Cove side, not the Long Island Sound side.

Work will take place Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with completion expected by the end of the year. You can follow construction updates or reach out directly to the town by contacting the Project Manager here.

Resident Concerns

  • Cyclists: A dedicated sidewalk compresses the shoulder in tight spots, making road cycling along Shore Road a bit more challenging.

  • Homeowners: If the sidewalk abuts your property, winter snow-shoveling and maintenance responsibilities now fall on you.

  • Traffic Delays: Expect temporary lane closures and minor bottlenecks during peak morning travel hours while heavy equipment is on site.

Between the Lines: Walking or running from the Village of Old Greenwich down to Tod's Point is about to get a lot safer and more enjoyable. And for impacted homeowners: Feinsod’s carries some very nice snow shovels.
