Most Connecticut towns have fewer children than they did five years ago according to CT Insider using U.S. Census Bureau data. Just 20% of CT's population is made up of people under the age of 18, nearly 2% lower than the nation overall.
Connecticut saw a drop of -1.3% losing 10,000 children from 743,000 in 2019 to 734,000 in 2023. The state's overall population also dropped by more than 23,000 over that same period.
Children account for 25.5% of the population in Greenwich, but the numbers have dropped -0.1% over the period. Children represent 18.3% of Stamford's population, a number that has dropped -2.2%. Darien has 31.2%, a drop of -2.6%.
Between the Lines: CT is more expensive to raise a family than other states due to its high taxes, high cost of living and inability to attract high-paying employers. Time to fix this.
