Connecticut Democrats Face Primary, While Republicans Unite

This weekend, Connecticut's major political parties gathered in separate conventions to endorse their slates for the upcoming November 2026 state election. While the Republican Party emerged fully united around a single ticket, the Democratic Party is heading toward a summer showdown.

State Representative Josh Elliott secured more than 25% of the delegate votes—well over the 15% threshold required—to force a primary challenge against incumbent Governor Ned Lamont. As a result, Democratic voters will head to the polls on August 11th before the general election in November.

Democratic Party: A Primary Battle First

While most of the Democratic incumbents sailed through uncontested, the top of the ticket faces a progressive challenge.

The Democratic Primary Matchup (August 2026):

  • Governor: Ned Lamont vs. Josh Elliott

Uncontested Democratic Endorsements:

  • Lt. Governor: Susan Bysiewicz

  • Attorney General: William Tong

  • Secretary of the State: Stephanie Thomas

  • Treasurer: Erick Russell

  • Comptroller: Sean Scanlon

Running for a third term, Governor Lamont is leaning into his record of budget surpluses, pension paydowns, and his role as a steady hand during turbulent times. Nationally, he is drawing contrasts by pushing back against the Trump administration’s welfare cuts and federal immigration tactics. State-side, his focus remains on childcare and education funding.

Meanwhile, State Representative Josh Elliott is running a progressive insurgent campaign. He argues that Ned Lamont (a millionaire from Greenwich) has refused to tax Fairfield County’s wealthiest residents to aggressively fix entrenched poverty and reform education funding.

Republican Party: Ticket Set for November:

The Republican Party avoided any primary friction at their convention, rallying overwhelmingly behind a 36-year-old state senator from Greenwich to lead their ticket and pivoting directly to the general election.

  • Governor: Ryan Fazio

  • Lt. Governor: Matt Corey

  • Attorney General: John Bolton (of Westport)

  • Secretary of the State: Peter Lumaj

  • Treasurer: Fred Wilms

  • Comptroller: Jen Tooker

The GOP platform is sharply focused on economic relief and local governance. Led by Fazio, the party is making Connecticut’s exceptionally high cost of living a central battleground. In particular, Fazio is targeting skyrocketing electric rates, pledging to slash the "Public Benefits" charges from utility bills. The broader platform also stresses broad tax relief and fiercely protecting local control over zoning and housing against state mandates.

Federal Election Showdown

There will still be a reason for Republicans to go to the polls in August. There will be two Republican primaries for U.S. Congress. They include competition for the 4th U.S. Congressional District (Michael Goldstein v Daniel Miressi); and for the 5th U.S. Congressional District (Chris Shea v Johnathan De Barros).

Between the Lines: For Greenwich residents, this convention weekend sends a loud message. The primary challenge by progressive Democrat Josh Elliott—and his explicit campaign strategy targeting the wealthiest residents of Fairfield County—should serve as a major wake-up call regarding the direction of the state's tax policy.
