Connecticut Declares War on Parents

In a single legislative session, Connecticut has fundamentally shifted the balance of power from the dinner table to the state house. By tightening control over education and medical freedom, the state is signaling a clear message: the government is now the primary arbiter of your child's well-being.

The State vs Parents

The logic connecting the state's new homeschooling regulations and its vaccine stance is simple: State distrust of parents.

  • Homeschooling Oversight (HB 5468): Using the tragic Eve Rogers case as a catalyst, the state now requires an annual "notice of intent" for homeschoolers and mandates DCF registry checks upon withdrawal. Critics argue this penalizes law-abiding families to mask the state’s own past failures to protect children already known to the system.

  • The Vaccine Standard Act (HB 5044): This law empowers the Commissioner of Public Health to set a state-specific "standard of care"—including passive immunizations—that can bypass national guidance. Crucially, it strips away Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) protections for school vaccines, placing state mandates above parental conscience.

The Greenwich Divide

The recent session has drawn a sharp line through the Greenwich delegation:

  • The State-First Bloc: Representatives Hector Arzeno (D-151) and Steve Meskers (D-150) voted for increased oversight, framing these as "common sense" measures to ensure no child becomes "invisible."

  • The Parent-First Bloc: Representative Tina Courpas (R-149) and Senator Ryan Fazio (S-36) stood firmly against what they call an assault on the family unit. Courpas argued these bills distract from the state’s inability to manage its own agencies, while Fazio framed the push as an erosion of the natural rights of parents.

Between the Lines: The difference is crystal clear. Greenwich Democrats have placed their trust in state-run solutions and unelected commissioners. Greenwich Republicans have chosen to put parents first.
