Education Secretary Linda McMahon was scheduled to visit McKinley elementary school in Fairfield, CT, as part of her 50-State "History Rocks" tour—until her visit was abruptly cancelled. A handful of parents raised "concerns" about the event, which was slated for Friday, January 30.

American History Celebrated. In the initial announcement on Wednesday, January 28, McKinley Principal Christine Booth praised the program: "Students will enjoy a dynamic, interactive assembly that brings American history and civic learning to life through fun, game show style activities, hands on participation, and even prizes. This high energy experience is designed to spark curiosity, celebrate our country's story, and make learning memorable for our students."

Never mind, American History Not Celebrated. However, just hours after the announcement, Fairfield Superintendent Michael Testani caved to pressure. He stated "We heard from families who expressed concerns and were considering keeping their children home." Apparently, it was deemed "inappropriate" for a representative of the Trump Administration to visit Fairfield, with critics citing recent events in Minnesota—specifically the killing of Alex Pretti by federal agents—as justification for the snub.

A Daughter of CT. Linda McMahon, who resides in Greenwich, is a highly accomplished resident of the state. Along with her husband, she co-founded World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), a global powerhouse headquartered in Stamford, CT. She was appointed by Republican Governor Jodi Rell in February 2009 to the Connecticut State Board of Education, where she served until April 2010. Her ties to Fairfield are deep: She served on the Board of Sacred Heart University for over 16 years and provided the funding for the Linda E. McMahon Commons.

Hearst Editorial Board Goes All-In: The Hearst Editorial Board, which oversees the Greenwich Time and other local papers, jumped in with both feet to praise the cancellation. Their editorial here argued that parents don't trust that their children are "safe" with the Education Secretary, claiming "this snub of Linda McMahon puts Fairfield parents on the right side of history,"

A Lone Voice of Reason. Hearst columnist Dan Haar attempted to salvage the Hearst Editorial Board's credibility with an article here entitled, "Fairfield's snub of Linda McMahon was a rude setback to liberal education and values." Haar noted that while critics may dislike the spectacle of WWE or McMahon's role in dismantling the Dept of Ed, the cancellation was self-defeating. Haar conluded, "Congratulations, Fairfield liberals....McMahon's visit was a Trojan horse, and you fell for it. Plus, it was just plain rude."

Between the Lines: The lesson for Fairfield students: History Rocks—unless it rocks the boat.
