Chinese Green Card Holder Scams Greenwich Dealership Out of $650,000 in Luxury Cars
If you walk into a luxury auto dealership in Greenwich, you’d expect the finance team to run your identity, verify your funds, and make sure your check doesn't bounce before handing over the keys to a six-figure sports car.
Apparently, that’s not always how it goes.
The Facts of the Case
On Wednesday, September 23, Lei "Lei Lei" Zhou, a 43-year-old Chinese citizen and U.S. Green Card holder residing in Flushing, Queens, was sentenced to 3.5 years (42 months) in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala in Hartford.
According to court documents, Zhou and his co-conspirators used stolen personal and financial details alongside counterfeit state photo IDs to pull off a multi-vehicle scam targeting a luxury dealership in Greenwich, Connecticut. The ring applied for fraudulent loans and leases to steal at least six high-end vehicles with a total value exceeding $650,000, transporting them to New York to be resold.
In one example highlighted by prosecutors, on October 4, 2022, Zhou used a stolen identity to secure $114,175.31 in financing for a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette. To make the deal look legitimate, he handed over a forged $14,000 check drawn under another identity theft victim's name as a down payment before driving the Corvette off the lot and heading back to New York.
Federal authorities ultimately repossessed most of the stolen vehicles, and Zhou was convicted of conspiracy to commit bank and wire fraud as well as aggravated identity theft.

3.Immigration Consequences
Because Zhou is a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) convicted of a federal felony, serving a federal prison sentence makes him subject to mandatory immigration removal (deportation) proceedings under federal law. Once his 42-month prison term is completed, his next stop will likely be an ICE deportation hearing to strip his permanent residency and return him to China.
