On Thursday the Greenwich Board of Education (BOE) voted to extend Superintendent Toni Jones' contract by two years. The contract was set to expire next June 2026, and a vote was rushed through to continue her contract until June 2028. Republicans on the BOE wanted this vote delayed for a few reasons.
First, school budget discussions are still unresolved and will likely be completed by mid-May. Republicans wanted to get the school budget reduced, resolved and then, based upon her performance with these matters, vote on extending Jones' contract. Republican member Kittle said, "You don't extend a contract when you are right in the middle of something major."
Secondly, there is still a legal dispute between First Selectman Camillo and the BOE challenging the validity of the October 2024 election of Jennifer Behette, favored by the Democrat members of the BOE, and not Paul Cappiali whom the Selectman had the right to appoint. A briefing update is expected on May 5. Republican member Walsh said, if we are required by law to undo the votes made as of October, "It's easy to re-vote many things, but it's very difficult to undo a contract."
