Newark airport suffered a 90-second radar and radio blackout on April 28 around 1:30 pm, which left the control tower unable to communicate with any incoming aircraft. This caused 358 canceled departures from Newark. Since then flights to and from Newark have been plagued by delays.
United Airlines, which operates the most flights from Newark, said 20% of Newark's controllers had walked off the job in recent weeks. According to the union, they did not walk off the job but took absences from the stress of multiple recent outages.
According to one air traffic controller, Newark airport is unsafe for travelers due to staff shortages. Another controller was reported as saying, "Don't fly into Newark. Avoid Newark at all costs."
